Hi. Having got a bit bored with the long wait for another child to come along in the form of a grandchild, I decided to hop out the Toy box and tackle the dismal state of reading and comprehension within my homeland- South Africa. After much consideration and debate with myself, I finally settled on introducing you and your beloved little ones to the antics of the A2Z Teddy Team within our home town called Teddyland. Not only am I going to take you along this crazy creative process, but I am going to enlist those of you, with money, your help, to get these learning tools into the hands of the most vulnerable, those with little or no money.
The 2016 PIRLS study (The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is an international comparative assessment that measures student learning in reading. Since 2001, PIRLS has been administered every 5 years. PIRLS documents worldwide trends in the reading knowledge of 4th-graders) result from 2016 shows that 8 in 10 children in SA cannot read for meaning.
This is shocking, to say the least. We are failing as a society if our Grade 4 learners (10 year olds) cannot understand. Stay in touch and be with us on this fun journey. See you in Teddyland.
